A Conversation with Los Altos Attorney Stephen Wu
Q. What are some of the legal challenges and opportunities faced by Los Altos businesses?
The economy has been tough for everyone in the Silicon Valley, including for Los Altos businesses. The tough economy leads to legal challenges for these businesses. For example, they may have customers who are unable or unwilling to pay them for their products and services. In that case, it may be necessary for them to get the help of a lawyer to write a demand letter, or bring an action for breach of contract to try to collect the amounts due.
Also, with increasing employee mobility during difficult times, and with the increasing use of computerized information for day-to-day business records, Los Altos employers may face the risk of employees stealing trade secrets and confidential company information. Some employees take the information in order to start a new, competing company, or to take the information to a new employer. In some cases, the new employer may be "raiding" employees from a business and may specifically encourage employees to take information from their soon-to-be former employers. In cases of data theft, businsses need legal help to obtain appropriate relief from this kind of unfair competition.
Our law firm helps businesses with breach of contract cases, theft of trade secret cases, and many other types of business litigation.
Q. What if you don't practice in the areas of law where I need help? Can you help me find a lawyer in Los Altos?
Yes, I can. I know many fine lawyers in Los Altos and surrounding areas. I am also active in local bar associations and have met many lawyers that way. I am delighted to speak with you on the phone or meet with you to hear about your legal issue. I can then refer you to another lawyer in the area who can help you.
Q. Why do you like practicing law and living in Los Altos?
Los Altos is a great place to live and work. I have made many friends in town, and the people here have been friendly and welcoming to me and my family since we moved here. My family I have enjoyed the many shops and restaurants in town. We also see how the community supports families and youth, with a strong commitment to education.
I have also enjoyed the business climate here, with many friendly people in local businesses. Our firm belongs to the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, and I have met many people at its activities.
I also have a great commute -- I can walk to work. I enjoy the morning and evening walks, seeing the trees and scenery in town.
Q. How are you involved with supporting the community?
Besides our firm belonging to the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce, I volunteer my time with my children's schools and community organizations. For instance, I am a member of the Rotary Club of Los Altos. As stated in the Rotary Club’s website, the Club “is comprised of a diverse group of approximately 160 business, professional, and community minded men and women who live or work in Los Altos or its adjacent communities.” The Club’s “members, ranging in age from 25 to 90, take an active role in our community and enjoy the satisfaction of an enriched life from helping others less fortunate.” I take seriously, and try to live by, the motto of Rotary International -- “Service Above Self.”
I spend most of my community volunteer time as an adult leader in Boy Scouts, which gives me an opportunity to have fun with my son. I serve as an Assistant Scoutmaster in his troop, Troop 37, which meets at the Los Altos Youth Center and is chartered by the Rotary Club of Los Altos. I also act as a Unit Commissioner (mentor) to two Cub Scout packs on behalf of the Stanford District of the Pacific Skyline Council. I serve on the Risk Management Committee of the Council, and am also a member of the National Eagle Scout Association and the Ohlone Lodge of the Order of the Arrow.
I also serve as a volunteer for various activities at my church, Sunnyvale First United Methodist Church, and have served as Stewardship Chair and member of the Finance Committee. My wife, Mary, and I are active volunteers for the education program, helping to teach and run the Sunday School Program.
